Family history

Son of Luther Bernard and Elizabeth Annie Featherstone of 1 Deepdale Gardens Sutton in Ashfield.
He married Audrey Eileen Slack in early 1943. they were married less than 6 months before William's death.

Military history

He did his training in Canada from January 1942 to September 1942.

Lincolnshire Echo: 10 killed and 3 seriously hurt, 4 houses damaged by 'plane crash on houses in Highfield Avenue Lincoln.
An eye witness described how the plane was zig-zagging and losing height, she thought it was trying reach open fields nearby when it banked steeply before it crashed. The plane dipped a wing, clipping a telegraph pole and then No 24 Highfield Ave which caused it to tip over onto the house on the other side of the road before bursting into flames.
6 members of the crew were killed along with 4 civilians (another died a few days later).

Extra information

In No 24 Highfield Ave Lena Thacker (38) her sons Laurie (4) and Anthony (3) died. As well as a visitor, Gwendolin Whitby (42).
No 25 Highfield Ave Margaret Marriott (11) was at home alone doing her homework when she was killed. Her parents were at their allotment.
No 22, 23, 25 and 27 Highfield Avenue were totally wrecked in the crash.
Anthony had been rescued from the house but died on the 29th June of his injuries.

Old Elizabethan's Society Service Record:
Sgt William Feahterstone was killed in England on a training flight on June 11th 1943. He went to Canada in January 1942 to train as a pilot and won his wings in September that year. He was buried with Military Honours in Sutton-in-Ashfield cemetery. He was married.
