He attended Queen Elizabeth School between 1892 and 1894.
He was a classicist and wrote books on Ancient Greeks and their culture. "The Rise of The Athenian Empire" and "Stories and Legends: A First Greek Reader with Notes, Vocabulary and Exercises". He was also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

Family history

His parents were Frank and Petronella Colson.
In 1920 he married Ernestine Mary Gibb of Killin Perthshire. In his will he left Ernestine £5264. 2s and she was living at Innerhaven, Mambeg, Garelochead.

Military history

Francis had served during WW1 in the Royal Engineers and was mentioned in despatches several times and was awarded the Order of The Nile (1914/18)
Old Elzabethan's Service Roll: Though a vetern of the First World War 1 his experience was offered for the second but the strain was too much. At the time of his death he was Deputy Commander Royal Engineers in Scotland.
