
Douglas Speed Bates

In 1939 he was living at 1 Grove Street and was working as a Charted Accountant.

His parents were Charles Douglas and Eva Alice Bates. In his will he left £76 4s 8d to his mother.
His mother's maiden name was Speed which explains his middle name.
According to the Old Elizabethan's Service Roll Douglas died at Nottingham General Hospital on the 17th March 1942. He had joined the Pioneer Corps in 1940 and served in Ireland and in 1941 he was transferred to R.O.A.C. for radio location work. He came out first in the examination after the Huddersfield course. He was taken ill when proceeding to his new unit in Cardiff.
He is buried in Nottingham Road Cemetery, Mansfield, plot A. 2781
His grave is near to that of fellow Queen Elizabeth School pupil G L Hopkinson.
