Military history

Bramley was one of the air gunners aboard Lancaster 1 LL812 which took off 2300 12 June 1944 from Mildenhall. Attacked and shot down by a night-fighter and exploded to the west of Oirschot (Noord Brabant) some 13 km north west from the centre of Eindhoven where all are buried in the Woensel General Cemetery.

Also killed were Martin Dea, Richard Paul Percival Holden, Francis Michael Leaney, Richard John William Moore, William Frederick Henry Rattle and Walter Richard Tanner.

17 Lancasters from 622 Sqdn (the other 16 returned) were part of a 303 aircraft attack on Gelsenkirchen’s Nordstern synthetic oil plant. 17 Lancasters were lost (6.1%). A rogue target indicator falling 10 miles short of the target was bombed by 35 ac and later phases of the operation were hampered by clouds of burning smoke from the blazing target. However, overall it can be considered a most successful operation. All oil production at the plant ceased with a loss of 1,000 tons of aviation fuel a day for several weeks.
