Edwin Watts was educated at Torquay and Kilburn Grammar Schools later moving to Heny Mellish School, Nottingham. He was employed by Mesrs Armstrong Whitworth Ltd of Coventry as an apprentice aeronautical engineer and was given dispensation to join the RAF for the war's duartion.

Edwin Lesley Watts was the only child of Ernest Edwin Percy and Elizabeth Watts of 42, Harrow Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham. Ernest and Elizabeth Watts later moved to Paignton, Devon.
