Military history

76 Lancasters and 19 Mosquitoes of 5 and 8 Groups attacked the Wahren railway yards at Leipzig on 10th/11th April 1945. The eastern half of the yards was destroyed. 7 Lancasters, including RF 122, were lost. 630 Sqdn at East Kirkby contributed 11 aircraft to this operation, 2 of them failing to return.

John Hopwood was the navigator aboard Lancaster I RF122 which took off 1823 10 April 1945 from East Kirkby to bomb the Wahren railway yards. Cause of loss and crash-site not established. No survivors. Fatalities: Hopwood + RJ Sassoon (P), SC Walton (FE), MS Munro (W/Op), F Fleming (AB), L Lynn (AG), WHR Jenkins (AG).
