He was the son of John M and Lucy H Syson and the brother of John Eric and Frederick Arthur Syson. In 1921, they lived on Hampden Street, Giltbrook and later Newthorpe, (both Nottinghamshire).
In May 1944, the 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards fought in Italy as part of the 1st Guards Brigade, 6th Armoured Division, taking part in the ferocious Italian Campaign around Cassino and preparing for the Liri Valley breakthrough.
Campaign and Operations:
Part of the British Eighth Army, operating in the rugged terrain of the Cassino sector during mid-1944.Maintained administrative records on camouflage smock distribution issued to rifle companies in May 1944.
Transitioned from defensive and subterranean positions into active breakout operations as part of the Allied spring offensive.
The Italian Breakthrough: His death on 28 May 1944 coincided with the intense Allied push immediately following the fall of Monte Cassino. During this window, the 3rd Battalion was engaged in heavy fighting as the Allies advanced through the Liri Valley toward Rome.
