He was the son of William George and Harriet Adnitt and the brother of Olive, Florence, Thomas W and Mabel W Adnitt. In 1921, they lived at 48, High Street, Kimberley before relocating to Bridle Road Farm, Strelley, (both Nottinghamshire) by 1939. Albert Adnitt and Annie Reeks were married during the Spring of 1940. She lived at 6a Briar Street, Meadows, Nottingham in 1939.
Albert Adnitt died of wounds in Italy 19 October 1943.
1st Batttalion Sherwood Foresters were stationed in the UK at the time so he was probably serving with 5th Battalion (formerly the 2/5th) Sherwood Foresters which fought in the Italian Campaign, participating in the fierce advance north from the Salerno beachhead and engaging in heavy combat during the Volturno River crossing.
Campaign and Operations
The Volturno Line: The battalion pushed forward under the 46th Infantry Division's 139th Infantry Brigade, facing stiff German resistance as the Allies assaulted the Volturno River defenses in early-to-mid October 1943.
Casualties and Combat: Fighting during the river crossings and subsequent mountainous terrain resulted in casualties and prisoner-of-war losses as German forces entrenched themselves in winter positions.
