HMS Hythe

HMS Hythe was a Bangor-class minesweeper commissioned in 1941. Hythe saw service in the Mediterranean during the Second World War. She was based in Malta as part of the 14th/17th Minesweeper Flotilla. At 01.09 hours on 11 Oct 1943, HMS Hythe (J 194) (Lt Cdr Leslie B. Miller, RN), escorting convoy MKS-27, was hit on the port side below the bridge by a Gnat from U-371 commanded by Waldemar Mehl, broke in two and sank in about four minutes north of Bougie, Algeria. Sixty two men were killed including Able Seaman John Howard from Ruddington, Signalman Noel Newbury from Hyson Green and Stoker 1st Class Leonard Worrell. Screened by HMS Rye (J 76) (Lt J.A. Pearson, DSC, RNR), twenty survivors were picked up by the South African armed trawler HMSAS Southern Isles (T 29) and landed at Gibraltar on 14 October. (Wikipedia and u boat.net)
