Family history

He was the son of Arthur and Frances Maltby and the brother of Arthur and Lilian Maltby. In 1911, they lived at 3, Clayton Street, Meadows, Nottingham. Maltby was staying with his mother at 3, Drayton Street, Sherwood, Nottingham at the time of his death.

Military history

Drowned in the Trent August 30th, when attempting to swim in his trousers and boots to a boat moored in mid-stream Wilford. Mrs. Mary E. Hill, of 22. Bradfield road, Broxtowe, said that in company with her brother, who was on leave, they met Maltby and went to Wilford. Upon her brother saying that he wanted to buy a birthday card from Nottingham, Maltby said, 'The quickest is across the river, I'll fetch that boat. He was swimming in his boots and trousers when he suddenly disappeared.
