He attended Henry Mellish school, Bulwell and obtained school rugby colours. He played football and cricket for Raleigh industries and signed amateur forms with Notts County FC.

He was an assistant scoutmaster and Sunday school teacher at St Paul's Daybrook.

In 1939, he was an unemployed clerk.

Family history

He was the son of Walter and May Dench. Walter Dench and Joan Edith Gaines were married at Darlington, County Durham in the summer of 1942.

Military history

Walter Dench joined the RAFVR in 1940, obtained his wings in 1941 and was posted overseas in 1943.

Walter Dench was the pilot of WellingtonX HE793, one of 10 Wellingtons from 40 Sqdn detailed to attack an aerodrome and satellites at Gerbini (Sicily) on 6th July 1943. The squadron ORB (TNA Air 27-412-72) refers to 'hazy conditions' making accurate target identification difficult. 'An explosion was seen and showers of sparks'. Dench's aircraft 'was seen to be hit and crash 40 kms to the north of the target area' on fire after Dench had attempted a safe emergency landing. (findagrave.com)
