Norman Ernest Powell was the son of Philip Norman and Lillie Powell, brother of Ronald and Ernest of 14, Second Avenue, Carlton, Nottingham.

Military history

Powell joined the RAF in May 1941. He trained in Canada and was based at Feltwell, Norfolk with 464 Sqdn.

Ventura II AJ188

On 22/1/1943, the operation was to bomb Mauperitus airfield, Cherbourg. Flak in target area was heavy and accurate. Whilst on the way out at low level ‘Sgt Powell was seen to fly into the sea. Cause unknown and not heard of since’. Posted missing, his body was later recovered. Three more crash landed ‘shot up’ 2 others damaged but returned safely. ‘Show was described as “a bit of a shaky do.”’ (464 Sqdn ORB, Record of Events, January 1943, TNA/Air27/1924/3)

Powell's crew mates are commemorated at Runnymede.

He had survived Operation Oyster a few weeks earlier.
