He was the son of George Henry and Harriett E Abbott of 54, Highbury Avenue, Bulwell, Nottingham. Harold and Olive Bell were married at Nottingham early in 1942. Their daughter Wendy was born early in 1943 so (obviously) never knew her father.

201 Squadron ORB, 1/8/1942:
'Sunderland sighted and identified at maximum visibility at 05.57 hours. Circled twice and then said he was returning home. Landed on the sea 5 miles off quarter of convoy, floated 2 minutes, then sank and blew up. Very much regret rescuing destroyers report no survivors. Reason for landing unknown.' (TNA Air 27- 1178-40)
