He was educated at Nottingham High School and Oxford University where he obtained an MA. He became a schoolmaster at the Royal Masonic School, Bushey, Hertfordshire.

Family history

He was the son of John James Cresswell Carlin and Annie Carlin MA (Oxon) and the brother of Constance Marjorie Carlin. In 1911 and 1921, they lived at 15, Conway Avenue, Carlton, Nottingham.

Military history

He joined at Royal Navy as a sub-lieutenant and quickly progressed through the ranks. He joined HMS Hood 10/10/1940.

He was the only RNVR officer invited to the king's Coronation Levee.
