He passed his City of Guild Correspondence course and his ambition was to be a "Town Clerk". He commenced his apprenticeship in Retford Town Hall before he volunteered for the military in October 1939.

Family history

He was the son of Mr and Mrs KH Hartmann. He had a sister named Margaret. The family lived at 4 Carr Road, Retford. Geoffrey went to the Wesleyan Primary School and the King Edward Grammar School, both in Retford. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing tennis and walking his dog Tim, an Irish Terrier.

Military history

He wanted to join the Fleet Air Arm but was offered a position with the Royal Navy. He enlisted at HMS Royal Arthur, Skegness. His first ship was the Bulldog. His next posting was to Rosyth, Scotland and lastly to the Hood.
