He captained the University's football team and was also a member of the University cricket team and also of Mansfield Amature Cricket Club. He was editor of the university's magazine.

Widespread sympathy is expressed to Mr & Mrs J Fowkes of 18 Clerkson Street, Mansfield, in the sad loss they have sustained by the tragic death of their youngest son, Pte Arthur Ronald Fowkes aged 27 of the R.O.A.C. who died in a hospital in London after being knocked down by a motor vehicle on Wednesday last week.
Pte Fowkes educated at Brunts school and studied at Nottingham University College and had completed a teaching course before joining the Army last summer. He was of a striking personality and was greatly liked by all who knew him. A keen sportsman, captained the University College's football team and a member of the cricket XI and also edited the sports section of the college magazine. Occassionally played for Mansfield Amature Cricket Club.
