Known as James. On the 1939 Register he is listed as James not Walter.
Attended Brunts School. On 18th December 1931 he joined the Post Office as a Sorting Clerk and Telegraphist. By the time the 1939 England and Wales Register was taken (29/9/1939) he had already enlisted in the RAF, along with his brother William Charles, as on they are both listed as being on active service with the RAF.

Family history

Son of Walter Stapleton and Emma Mary Garfield, of 27 Priestsic Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. Walter snr and Emma only married on the 9th January 1915 a few weeks before Walter James's birth on 18th February. Walter snr was serving with the Sherwood Foresters at the time. He had enlisted on the 7th August 1914 and served until 28th February 1919. He was awarded the Silver War badge due to a gun shot wound to the left arm (12/3/1918). On the 1939 he is working as a butchery slaughterman, partially disabled ex-serviceman.
Apart from William Charles born on 6th February 1920,James also had 3 other siblings, Roabert in 1927, Marioan Elizabeth in 1932 and John in 1935. He had another sister, Margaret but she died at or soon after her birth in 1918.
In his will James left his father £167 2s 3d.
