He was in the evacuation of Dunkirk. The last letter his wife had from him was dated June 8th. It is assumed that he lost his life when the ship on which he was a passenger was sunk by enemy action.

In August 1940, Mrs. Johnson, of 34,Ollerton road,Retford, received notification that her husband, Pte. John Wm.Johnson, the Sherwood Foresters (attach-ed R.A.S.C.), had been posted as missing as from June 20th.

On Sept. 23rd she received official intimation to the effect that he had died whilst a prisoner of war at Pornichet, Labaule, St. Nazaire, and had been buried in the English cemetery at Labaule. However, it appearshe did not die whilst he was a prisoner of war. It appears that his body was found on the coast near to Pornichet, between the 6th and 10th July 1940.
