Son of Frederick William and Elizabeth Hawksworth, of Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.
In 1921 the family were staying with relatvies at Mount View, Winster. Frederick worked as a dental operative for Richard Humphreys, dentist of 59a Leeming street, Mansfield. Frederick had served in the R.A.S.C. during WW1.

Military history

The 9th Battalion was based at Bulwell and in April 1940 they were sent to France as part of the B.E.F, initially for training and labour duties but due to the advance of the Germans they were sent into action. Claude was lost in the retreat to Dunkirk, he had initially been reported as missing.
