He was the son of Edwin and Maud Leary and the brother of Phyllis Leary. In 1939, their address was cited as Tithby, Bingham, Cropwell Butler. They may later have re-located to Scarrington, (both Nottinghamshire).
Frederick Leary was not a victim of the Wormhout massacre itself but he was killed in action just days prior during the same intense rearguard campaign.
Leary was a machine gunner with 4th Battalion Cheshire Regiment attached to 2nd Bn Royal Warwickshire Regiment during the Dunkerque retreat. Around 100 men from the Warwickshires, 8th Bn Worcester Regiment and the Cheshires were captured by 1st SS Division Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler and herded into a barn near Wormhouldt about 20 miles south of Dunkerque and murdered (see record for Ernest Arthur Braitwaite).
