He served alongside 81 Company of the Pioneer Corps. During mid-May 1940, his unit was deployed in Northern France trying to fortify and hold critical rail and road pathways. As the German panzer divisions cut through Allied lines, Pioneer units were caught completely exposed, with sections shattered or scattered by advancing enemy tanks. Private Pitchford was killed during this chaotic retreat.
