Military history

MALO-LES-BAINS COMMUNAL CEMETERY Plot 2. Row A. Grave 27

During the 1940 Dunkirk evacuation, the 1st and 3rd Battalions of the Grenadier Guards served as a vital rearguard for the British Expeditionary Force (BEF). They fought desperate defensive actions along canals between Furnes and the beaches of De Panne, finally being evacuated under heavy fire from HMS Ivanhoe and other vessels.

The Grenadier Guards at Dunkirk were heavily involved in several specific locations and actions:The Retreat to Veurne & De Panne: As the perimeter shrank, the 1st Battalion retreated into the town of Veurne (Furnes), Belgium—just a few miles from the beaches. Companies dug in along the local canals, manning Bren gun posts in cellars and bombed-out buildings to hold off advancing German forces while Allied troops embarked.
