Elijah George Mendham known as George was born in 1894 the son of Albert a gamekeeper and Adah Susan Mendham (née Church) of Budby, Nottinghamshire.
Albert was born in 1869 at Branson, Suffolk, Adah Church in 1871 at Silverstone, Northamptonshire, she died in 1907 aged 37, they were married in 1893, they had the following children - Elijah George b.1894, Albert b.1895, William Alfred b.1897, Margaret b.1899, John Henry b1900, Alice b.1901 and Martha b.1903, all born at Clumber.
In 1911, George lived with his father Albert at The Aviaries, Clumber Park, Worksop his father Albert 42 yrs is a widow and a game keeper, he is living with his son Elijah George 16 yrs single and a farm boy.
George Mendham attested on 16th December 1915 at Rufford, Nottinghamshire aged 21 years 2 months he was a farm labourer his next of kin was his father Alert of Budby, Ollerton . He was placed in the reserves, mobilised on 14th October 1918 and posted to the Machine Gun Corps (Training Reserve) on 16th October 1918. Whilst training, he was admitted to the Military Hospital at Cannock Chase on 26th October 1918 with influenza. He recovered and was discharged from hospital on 12th November 1918. He was granted home leave prior to demobilisation on 1st February 1919 and was admitted to the accident hospital at Newark and died from cardiac failure whilst in a diabetic coma. He is buried in St Mary's Churchyard, Edwinstowe.
