He was a coal miner from a family of miners.

Family history

Samuel Bullock was born in 1882 at Swanwick he was the son of William a coal miner and the late Mary Bullock née Rumley of Alfreton, Derbyshire.

His father William was born in 1854 at Claycross, his mother Mary Rumley was born in 1850 at Sleetmoor, Derbyshire she died in 1910 she was 60 yrs of age, they were married on 21st May 1877 at Swanwick, they went on to have 5 children.

In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at Oakentopre,Alfreton, William 57 yrs a widow and is a coal miner, he is living with his sons Edgar 21 yrs a coal miner and Harold 19 yrs a coal miner also living with the family is a neice Selina Rumley 21 yrs a genral domestic servant.

He was the husband of Ann Ellen Hooley (born 10th May 1887) they were married on 24th November 1906 at Ripley Methodist church, they lived at 96 Welbeck Street, Creswell and they had the following children, Edna Eileen born 14th February 1907, Elizabeth Ellen born 22nd November 1908, Phyllis Mary born 16th October 1910, Annie Kate born 1st October 1912 and Mggie born 25th March 1916.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 96 Welbeck Street, Creswell. Samuel 28 yrs is a coal miner, he is living with his wife Ann Ellen 23 yrs and their children Edna Ellen 4 yrs, Elizabeth Ellen 2 yrs Phyllis Mary 5 months old.

Commencing 16th October 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 24 shillings and 6 pence a week.

Military history

Lance Corporal Samuel Bullock enlisted 2nd September 1914, aged 32 years 30 dayshe was acoal miner and was assigned to 'D' Coy 12th Bn Sherwood Foresters. On 26th February 1915, he was discharged from the Army as medically unfit. However, by July 2015 he had re-enlisted into the Lancashire Fusiliers. He died of wounds on 27th March 1916, he is buried at Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres Grave Reference: IX G 87

Bullock's great granddaughter Deborah Clay notes 'The tragedy is that on 25th March 1916 my great grandmother Ann gave birth to their fifth daughter, Maggie and we've always wondered if she could have received a telegram telling her Samuel had been injured. Could this have caused her to go into labour? Regardless he would never know her and they already had four other girls aged 4, 6 8 & 9.'
