Family history

John Ernest Allen was born on 31st January 1890 and baptised on 9th March 1890 at St Ann's Nottingham he was the son of the late John Allen and Lilian May Allen née Herod and the brother of Leonard Bertie Allen.

His father John was born in 1865 at Westley, Derbyshire, he died in 1898 aged 33 yrs, his mother Lillian Mary Herod was born in 1863 , they were married in 1889 at Nottingham,

In the 1911 census the family lived at 10 Riddings Terrace, Wellington Street, Alfred Street Central, Nottingham.

In 1915, he married Violet Millichamp (born 15th March 1890) in 1915 at Nottingham, they lived in 1911 at 62, Norton Street, Radford, Nottingham.

Commencing 21st January 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Violet went on to marry Sidney Raynor in 1923 and in 1939 they lived at 59, Radford Boulevard, Nottingham.

Military history

Private John Ernest Allen enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment he was killed inaction on 1st July 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial Dud Corner, Panels 87 to 89
