William George Towle was born in 1887 at Nottingham, he was the son of Frank a coal miner and Mary Towle née Baguley
His father Frank was born in 1860 at Sneinton, his mother Mar Baguley was born in 1860 at Screveton, they were married on 23rd August 1881 at St Mary's Church, Nottingham, they went on to have 9 children.
In the 1911 census William 25 yrs is a boarder he is a coal miner he is boarding with Dolly Towle 24 yrs and Kate Towle 20 yrs, they are boarding at 30 Haven Street, Nottingham, they are boarding with George Fisher 53 yrs a coal mner and his family.
William George Towle married his wife Kate Wright (born 12th January 1892 In Nottingham, they lived at 43 Brassey Street, New Radford, Nottingham, they had a daughter May born 26th May 1912 at Nottingham. 1912.
Following his death his widow Kate was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence which commenced on 14th April 1919.
Private William George Towle enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 5th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment.
He was killed in action on 22nd September 1918 during a German attack on the battalion's position. He has no known grave and is commemorated on Vis-en-Artois Memorial (Panel 7).
Nottingham Evening Post, ‘Roll of Honour’, 14 October 1918: ’Towle. Killed in action Sept. 22nd 1918, Pte William Towle, Sherwood Foresters, of 43 Brassey-street, Radford. His painful sufferings are now ended, his wounded body is at rest, his soul from every ill amended, reposing on his Saviour’s breast.
