James Tomlinson was born in 1892 the son of John a coal miner and Clara Tomlinson [née Taylor ,
His father John was born in 1857 at Hardwick Stone, Staffordshire, his mother Clara Taylor was born 1869 at Wordsley, Staffordshire, they were married on 15th March 1890 at St Peters Church, Stoke, Staffordshire, they had 5 children, James's surviving siblings were - Alfred b.1889, John W b.1889,John Lewis b1890 and Margaret b1892,
They lived at 51 Kennington Road Radford in 1911. John 46 yrs was a miner hewer, he is living with his wife Clara 44 yrs and their children, John w 21 yrs a stationary engine driver James 19 yrs a coal miner and Harold 15 yrs enry a tobacco lifter's apprentice.
Gunner James Tomlinson, enlisted at Nottingham, he served with'A' Bty, Royal Field Arillery. he was killed in action on 31st March 1917 and is buried in Roclincourt Military Cemetery, France, Grave Reference IV. F. 3
