William Nix was born in 1884 at Radford, he was the son of Robert a dyers labourer and Susan Nix nee Barnes of of 13 Ledger Yard Ilkeston Road Nottingham.
His father was born in 1852 at Nottingham, his mother Susan Barnes was born in 1853 at Nottingham, they were married on 1st April 1876 at St Leodegarius Church, Basford, Nottingham, they went on to have 4 children.
In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 13 Ledger Yard, Ilkeston Road, Nottingham, Robert 59 yrs is a dyers labourer, he is living with his wife Susan 58 yrs and their children, Henry 32 yrs a tailor and Elizabeth 29 yrs a tobacco packer.
William married Florence Wheatcroft (born 29th August 1885) in 1908 at Nottingham they had the following children, Arthur William born 20th April 1908, May born 20th September 1909, Frederick born 28th October 1911, Hilda born 15th February 1914,and Florence Nix born 12th March 1916.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 1 Pine Terrace Ledger Yard, Nottingham, William 27 yrs is a lace maker, he is living with his wife Florene 26 yrs and their children, Arthur 3 yrs and May 2 yrs old.
Commencing 21st October 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 37 shillings and 11 pence a week.
Gunner William Nix, enlisted at Nottingham he served with 2/1st (Berkshire) Battery, 158th Brigade Royal Horse Artillery, he was killed in action on 2nd April 1918 at Arras. He is buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, France
Death notice published 22nd April 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :-
“NIX. – Killed in action, April 2nd, 1918, Gunner William Nix, aged 34. Thy will be done. – From his loving mother, dad, brothers Jim, Harry (with the colours), sister Eliza Ann, Ada, and Jim.”
In memoriam published 2nd April 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :-
“NIX. – In loving memory of our son and brother, William Nix, killed in action April 2nd, 1918. Gone, but not forgotten. – From his mother, dad, brothers Jim and Harry, sister Eliza Ann.”
