Alfred Herbert (junior) was born in 1899 at Nottingham, he was the of Alfred Herbert (senior) a brick layers labourer and Ellen Lodge née Ratcliffe and the brother of Florence, Gladys Annie, Elizabeth, Charles, Lily and Ida Lodge.
His father Alfred Herbert was born in 1868 at Leeds his mother Ellen Ratcliffe was born in 1867 at Nottingham, she died in 1917 aged 50 yrs, they were married in 1892 at Nottingham, they went on to have 8 children,
in the 1911 census the family are living at 45 Citadel Street Radford, Alfred Herbert 43 yrs is a brick layers labourer, he is living with his wife Ellen 44 yrs and their children, Florence 18 yrs a cigarette paker, Gladys Annie 16 yrs a cycle viewer, Alfred Herbert 11 a scholar, Lizzziebeth 9 yrs a scholar, Charles Ratclffie 5 yrs, Lily 3 yrs and Ada 5 months old.
Private Alfred Herbert Lodge enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 8th battalion King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, he was killed in action on 7th July 1918, he is buried in the Pernes British Cemetery, France.
