Ernest James was born in 1888 at Radford, he was the son of Edward a lace maker and Frances James née Wilcox and the brother of Louisa James. In 1911 they lived at 2 Radford Boulevard Nottingham.
His father Edward was born in 1847 at Radford, his mother Frances Wilcox was born in 1846 at Basford, they were married in 1868 at Radford, they went on to have 11 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 2 Radford Boulevard, Radford, Nottingham, Edward James 64 yrs a lace maker is living withhis wife Frances James 66 yrs and their children, Louisa 26 yrs a cigar maker and Ernest 22 yrs a baker/confectioner.
He was the husband of Mabel (née Place) James of 29 Salisbury Street Old Radford Nottingham whom he married in 1915 at Nottingham.
Private Ernest James, enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Radford, he served with the 1/4th Battalion Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment), he died of influenza on 21st October 1918. He is buried in Ferozepore Military Cemetery, India.
Death notice published 9th November 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :-
“JAMES. – Died abroad, October 21st, from influenza, Pte. Ernest James, West Surrey Regt. One of the best. – Loving brother and sister George and Dot, nieces Winifred and Mildred.”
