Joseph Foster was born in 1887 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late William a herbalist and Ellen Foster née Butler.
His father Willim was born in 1835 at Costock, he died in 1909 at Sneinton he was 74 yrs old, his mother Ellen Butler was born in 1848 in India, they were married on 16th Ocotober 1864 in Bengal India, they had 13 children.
In the 1901 census the family are living at 18 Kentwood Road, Sneinton, William 63 yrs is a herbalist he is living with his wife Ellen 53 yrs and 6 of their children including Joseph 13 yrs a coal deliverer.
In the 1911 census his mother Ellen Foster 64 yrs is boarder and a widow she is living with her son Jospeh Foster 23 yrs also a boarder, and an assistant in the business they are living at 12 Mafeking Street, Sneinton, Nottingham, they are boarding with her son Henry Foster 38 yrs also a widow and is a glass and china seller and his children, Albert Henry 7 yrs, Lewis 6 yrs, Doris 4 yrs and William 2 yrs of age,
He was the husband of Rosa Elizabeth (born 9th March 1886,) whom he married in 1912 a Nottingham, and the father of Stanley Foster born 1913 in Nottingham.
His widow remarried on 25th September 1915 to Arthur Savage a machinist
Private Joseph Foster, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2nd Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, he was a pre war regular who landed in France with the battalion on 8th September 1914 and who was reported missing since 20th October 1914, he was confirmed as having been killed in action on that date on 30th June 1915. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial.
