Arthur Toynton was born in 1889 the son of Henry, a painter, and Millicent Toynton (née Knott). His father was born in 1849 at Spalding (he died on 1st August 1910 aged 61), his mother in 1850 also at Spalding. Married in 1872, they had nine children, six surviving infancy - William b.1874, Harry b.1878, Ada b.1880, Eva b.1884, Ernest b.1886 and Arthur b.1889.
In 1911, they lived at 12 Selhurst Street, Radford Road, Nottingham. Ada was a machinist and Ernest a professor of music. Arthur married Emmerline Fisher in 1915 and they lived at 11b Ledger Yard, Ilkeston Road, Radford, Nottingham.
Arthur’s effects of £350/7s/7d were left to his widow Emmerline (Probate Nottingham 8/10/1918).
Private Arthur Toynton enlisted at Nottingham he served with the 7th battalion Norfolk Regiment, he was killed in action on 7th August 1918 at Morlancourt, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Panel 23
In Memoriam 7th August 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post:
“TOYNTON. – In ever-loving memory of my devoted husband, Arthur, who fell in action at Morlancourt August 7th, 1918. Loved and lost awhile. – Emmeline.
“TOYNTON. – In loving memory of our dear friend, Arthur, who fell in action August 7th, 1918. His memory to cherish, because we knew his worth. – Mr., Mrs. [illegible], and Billy.”
