George Hempshall (junior) was born in 1889 at Long Bennington, Lincolnshire, he was the son of George Hempshall (senior) a farm labourer and the late Charlotte Hempshall née Burton, of Costa Road, Long Bennington.

His father was born in 1855 at Long Bennington, his mother Charlotte Burton was born in 1854 in Newark she died in 184 at Newark she was 40 yrs of age, they were marred in 1881 at Lincoln, they had 5 children.

In the 1911 census his widowed father George Hempshall 55 yrs a farm labourer is living at Costa Road, Long Bennington, he is living with his daughter Emma 25 yrs single.

George Hempshall (junior) married his wife Martha Jane Middleton (born 2nd August 1870) in 1915 their marriage was recorded in the Farnham district, Hampshire they lived at Great North Road, Foston, Grantham.

Commencing 31st July 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shilling a week.

Military history

Private George Hempshall enlisted at Lincoln, whilst residing at Grantham, he served with the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action at Gallipoli on 9th August 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial.
