Joseph Arhtu Jordan was born 0n 14th April 1896 at Melbourne, Derbyshire,he was baptised on 17th May 1896 at Melbourne, Derbyshire, he was the son of Joseph a labourer and gardener and Mary Jordan née Brooks and the brother of Alice, Clarence, Nelly, Mabel, Bertyha, Frank and Philip Jordan.

His father Joseph was born in 1866 at Burton upon Trent, his mother Mary Brooks was born in 1867 at Melbourne, they were married on 27th January 1889 at Melbourne, Derbyshire, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In 1901 the family lived at Melbourne, Derbyshire and in 1911 at Halam, Southwell, Nottinghamshire.

In the 1911 census the family are living at Halam village near Southwell, Joseph 45 yrs is a gardener, he is living with his wife Mary 44 yrs and their children, Alice Margaret 21 yrs no occupation listed, Mable 18 yrs no occupatio listed, Arthur 14 yrs a farm boy, John Eric 13 yrs a scholar, Frank 10 yrs and Phillip 7 years of age.

Joseph was the husband of Althea Jordan (born 20th May 1894) and the father of Clifford Jordan. born 1st February 1918 they lived at 15 Union Street, Grantham, Lincolnshire.

Military history

Private Joseph Arthur Jordan enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 2331 in the South Notts Hussars, later transferring to the 19th Company, Machine Gun Corps, he was killed in action between 10th and 18 th April 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial Panel 154 to 159 and 163

Margaret Rose, Jordan's great granddaughter, notes 'His family farmed at Edingley near Southwell. My grandma worked for Starkeys of Southwell as a maid before marriage. My dad was born 1/2/18 so was only a few weeks old when Joseph was killed.'
