Family history

Samuel Vincent Boot was born in 1889 at Bulwell he was the son of the late Samuel Boot a coal miner and Ann Boot Née Redmile of 319 Quarry Road, Bulwell.

His father Samuel was born in 1855 at Stanton on the Wolds his mother Ann Redmile was born in 1854 at Bulwell, they were married on 12th March 1875 at St John’s Church, Bulwell they had seventeen children sadly 12 died in infancy or early childhood. Samuel’s four siblings to survive infancy were Harriett b.1882, Herbert b.1884, Florence b.1889 and William b.1891.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 319 Quarry Road Bulwell Nottingham. Samuel 56 yrs is a coal miner hewer he is living with his wife Ann 57 yrs and their children, Samuel 21 yrs a coal miner hewer and Wiliam 20 yrs a coal miner hewer and their granddaughter Elsie 11 yrs of age.

Samuel Vincent married Clara Williams (born 16th September 1889) they were married on 23rd December 1911 at St John’ church, Bulwell, they lived at 79 Duchess Street, Bulwell and had two children, Herbert born 17TH February 1912 and Ida born 25th December 1914.

Commencing 31st July 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence a week.

Military history

Samuel Vincent Boot enlisted at Nottingham and initially served (22450) in the Sherwood Foresters later transferring to the Northamptonshire Regiment. He landed in France on 12th July 1915 and died of wounds at No 50 Casualty Clearing Station. He was buried in Hazebrock Communal Cemetery Nord France Grave Reference: II F 7.

In Memoriam published 20th January 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :

“BOOT. – In loving memory of Pte. S. V. Boot, who died of wounds January 20th, 1916. A day of remembrance sad to recall. – From his loving wife [Clara] and children, mother, father, sisters, and brothers.”
