Family history

William Cutts (junior) was born in 1884 at Newark he was the son of William Cutts (senior) a bricklayer and his first wife Mary Ann Cutts née Smith, of East Kirkby

His father William was born 1861 at Newark, he was a bricklayer his mother Mary Ann Smith was born in 1857 at Newark she died in 1894 aged 37 yrs, they were married on 15th September 1878 at St Leonards Church, Newark upon Trent, they went on to have 6 children.

Following the death of his first wife Mary his father went on to re marry Carlottte (Lottie) Ralph born 1862 at Bringhurst, Leicestershire, they were married in 1896 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had 6 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family were living at 29 Forest Street, East Kirkby.William (senior) 50 yrs is a bricklayer he is living with his second wife Lottie 47 yrs, and their children, married daughter Annie Mercer(néé Cutts) 29 yrs a glue packer, Charles 24 yrs a coal miner, Joseph 22 yrs a bricklayers labourer, Hilda 14 yrs hosiery apprentice, Alfred 13 yrs scholar, Arthur 11 yrs a scholar, Walter 9 yrs a scholar, Albert 7 yrs scholar, also living with them is a grandson William Mercer 7 yrs.

Although William is listed on the 1911 census with his family his name has been struck out so he was probably serving in the Army at this time.

Military history

Rifleman William Cutts enlisted at Newark on 18th August 1903, he was a bricklayer he served with the 2nd battalion Royal Irish Rifles, he was killed in action on 20th September 1914, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the La Ferte- Sous-Jouarre Memorial, France
