Family history

Cecil Shaw was born in 1884 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late Henry a carriage straightener in a lace machinists and Mary Hannah Shaw née Southern and the brother of George, Kate, Lille and Carrie Shaw. of 'The Orchards' Lowdham.

His father Henry was born in 1858 at Radford, he died in 1915 he was aged 57 yrs his mother Mary Hannah Southern was born in 1861 at Radford, they were married in 1879 at Radford and went on to have 6 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census they lived at Station Road Lowdham Nottinghamshire. Henry 53 yrs is a carriage straightener, he is living with is wife Mary 50 yrs and their children, Kate 28 yrs a cigar maker, Cecil 27 yrs a carriage straightener and Carrie 15 yrs of age.later moved to

Military history

Private Cecil Shaw enlisted at Nottingham on 13th February 1915, giving his address as The Orchard, Lowdham, Nottinghamshire, he was 30 yrs and 11 months old he was a farmer, he was posted with the service number (23280) into the 9th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) He landed in France 28th June 1916, on 3rd February 1917 he was transferred to the Machine Gun Corps, he became a prisoner of war on 23rsd March 1918. He was returned home on 31st December 1918. Discharged from the Army on 11th March 1919, he was 35 yrs of age, his was discharged being no longer fit for service, due to rheumatism his discharged address was the Orchard, Lowdham, he was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.

He died on 9th February 1920 and is buried at Nottingham General Cemetery.
