Fred Young was born in 1899 at Cranborne, Dorset he was born Fred Roberts he was the son of Fred a domestic groom, and Annie Eliza Young née Roberts of Grove Stables, Barnby Moor, Retford, Notts.
His father Fred was born in 1879 in Gloucestershire, his mother was Annie Eliza Roberts born in 1880, at Ringwood, they were married in 1908 their marriage was recorded in the Wimborne, Dorset Registration disitrict Annie brought a number of children to the marriage,
In the 1911 census the family are living at Bellows Cross, Cranbourne, Fred Young 32 yrs is a groom, he is living with his wif Annie Young née Roberts and her children, Fred Young Roberts 12 yrs Percy Young Roberts 10 yrs, Marjorie Young Roberts 9 yrs and their children, Arthur Young 3 yrs and Winifred Young 4 months old, Fred stated on the census that he had been married 3 yrs and had 2 children.
Private Fred Young enlisted at Brockenhurst, Hampshire, he served with th 2/8th battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, he was killed in action on 1st November 1918, he is buried at Cross Roads Cemetery Fontaine-Au-Bois
