John Edward Young was born in 1897 at Spilsby, Lincolnshire he was the son of Edward a saw mill labourer and Elizabeth Young née Wilkes of 34, Granville St., Laughton Common, Rotherham

His father Edward was born in 1869 at Spilsby, his mother Elizabeth Wilkes was born in 1871 at Halton. Lincolnshire, they were married in 1895, their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, Nottingham, they went on to have 6 children.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 110 Grantham Street, Grantham, Edward 40 yrs is a saw mill labourer, he is living with hs wife Elizabeth 40 yrs and their children, John Edward 14 yrs, a scholar Amy Elizabeth 11 yrs, a scholar Charles William 8 yrs, a scholar George 7 yrs, a scholar Herbert 4 yrs and Daisy2 yrs old.

Military history

Private John Young enlisted at Retford whilst residing at Retford, he served with the 1st battalion Bedfordshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 27th September 1918 in France, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, France
