Family history

Alfred Wray was born on 23rd September 1890 at Nettleham, Lincolnshire, he was the son of John a general labourer iron stone miner above ground. and Mary Ellen Wray née Smith of Nettleham Lincoln.

His father John was born in 1849 at Billingham, Lincolnshire, his mother Mary Ellen Smith was born in 1847 at Nettleham, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1873 at Nettleham, Lincolnshire, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at Beckside, Nettleham, John 62 yrs is a general labourer, he is living with his wife Mary Ellen 64 yrs and their children, Elizabeth 22 yrs no occupation listed and Alfred 20 yrs a farm labourer.

Military history

Private Alfred Wray enlisted at Grantham whilst residing at Kelham, he served with the 2nd battalion South Staffordshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 24th March 1918 in France, he is buried at Lebucquiers Communal Cemetery Extension, France
