Family history

Bertram Woods was born on 21st November 1880 at Woodditton, Newamarket ,Cambridgeshire he was the son of Harry a domestic gardener and Emily Anne Woods, née Segrott of Oxford St., Exning, Suffolk.

His father Harry was born in 1853 at Norton, Suffolk, his mother Emily Segrott was born in 1854 at Newmarket, Cambrigeshire, they were married in 1872 at Bury St Edmunds, they went on to have 12 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 censyus the family are living at 1 Ash Terrace, Lacey Lane, Exning, Suffolk, Harry 58 yrs is a domestic gardener, he is living with his wife Emily Anne 58 yrs and their children, William Woods 29 yrs a reeserish also living with the family is Annie Eliza Jones 14 yrs their grandaughter.

At the time of the 1911 census, Bertram is living away from home as he is in the Royal Navy.

Military history

Bertram had originally joined the Royal Navy on 21st November 1895 he saw his first service on 16th September 1896, and his last service on 20th May 1901, his last ship was HMS Pembroke.

Private Bertram Woods enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Cropwell Bishop, Nottingham, he served initially were the service number 43435 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he later transferred to the 9th battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he is buried at AIF Burial Ground, Flers, France.

Extra information

His brother Gunner William Woods also died in the Great War, he served with the 121st Battery,Royal Field Artillery he died on 14th September 1914, he is buried at Ciry-Salsogne Communal Cemetery France.

His brother having no direct connection with Nottinghamshire is not listed on the Nottinghamshire Roll of Honour.
