Family history

Anthony Gordon Woodend was born in 1896 at Eagle, Lincolnshire, he was the son of William Woodend a gamekeeper and Jane Woodend, née Groom of Eagle Hall, Newark, Notts.

His father William was born in 1859 at Brickers Bank, Yorkshire, his mother Jane Groom was born in 1865 at Tivetshall, Norfolk, they were married on 25th April 1893 at Beccles, Suffolk, they went on to have 6 children.

In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at Eagle Hall, Lincolnshire, William 53 yrs is a game keeper, he is living with his wife Jane 46 yrs and their children, Leslie 16 yrs an assitant gamekeeper, Eric 13 yrs a sholar, Cecil 10 yrs a scholar and Audrey 8 yrs of age.

In the same 1911 census Anthony Woodend has left the family home he is living at Eagle, Lincolnshire, he is 15 yrs of age and is a grocers apprentice, he is living with Henry John Whitehead 58 yrs a grocer and his family.

Military history

Rifleman Anthony Gordon Woodend enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Lincoln, he served wit the 9th battalion Rifle Brigade, he was killed in action on 9th August 1915, having no known graee his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial
