Thomas Wharton was born in 1879 at Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland, he was the son of the late John Wharton and Dorothy Wharton née Brunskill, of Bathley, Newark, Notts,

His father John Henry Wharton was born in 1857 at Keswick, he died in 1915 in Yorshire, he was 58 yrs old, his mother Dorothy Brunskill was born in 1862 at East Ward, Westmorland, they were married in 1878 at Barrow in Furness, they went on to have 7 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

in the 1911 census his parents are living at 3 Setts Bank, Kinder Hayfield, John Wharton 52 yrs is a general labourer, he is living with his wife Dorothy 48 yrs and their married daughter Rachel Friend 28 yrs, son William 23 yrs a general labourer and their grandson John Henry 6 yrs and William Henry Friend 10 months old.

In the same 1911 census Thomas has left the family home he is living at 90 Main Street, Goldthorpe near Rotherham, he is 32 yrs and is a coal mine, he is living with Emma Beevers 53 yrs a dressmaker and her family.he is one of 4 boardes at the address.

Private Thomas Wharton enlisted at Keighley, Yorkshire, he served with the 27th (Tyneside Irish) Bn Northumberland Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 28th April 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial
