Family history

William Wardley was born in 1892 at Sheffield, he was the son of the late Frederick Goodwin Wardley a farrier and the late Amelia Wardley née Lucas of 10 Angus Square, Sheffield.

His father Frederick Goodwin Wardley was born in 1856 at Warsop, Nottinghamshire, he died in 1920 at Ecclesall Bierlow, Sheffield, he was aged 64 yrs, his mother Amelia Lucas was born in 1855 at Birmingham, she died in 1913 at Sheffield, she was 58 yrs old they were married in 1877 at Sheffield, they had 10 children sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family were living at 10 Angus Square Sheffield, Frederick is 56 yrs and is a farrier, he is living with his wife Amelia 56 yrs and their children, Alfred 32 yrs a general labourer, Albert 29 yrs a general labourer, William 19 yrs a drapers porter, Alice 16 yrs working in a drugs warehouse and Agnes 14 yrs

He was the husband of Ethel Bloom Sampson ) whom he married on 25th December 1915 at St Marys Church Shefield, William was 23 yrs of age and a blacksmith living at 97 Harwood Street, his father was Frederick Goodwin Wardley a blacksmith, Ethel Bloom Sampson was 25 yrs of age living at Markham Moor, Nottinghamshire Ethel died aged 83 on 10 May 1973. Their daughter, Marjorie, who was born in 1916 (birth registered East Retford, Apr/May/Jun 1916), died on 5 September 1992 aged 76.

Ethel was probably Ethel Bloom Sampson, the daughter of George and Annie E Sampson, who was born on 23 April 1890 in Upton, Lincolnshire, where the family was living. The family had moved to Askham, near Retford, by 1901. The sub registration district of East Retford is Tuxford, the nearest town to Milton.

In 1911, Ethel (20) was a housemaid in the household of John Spencer Norvill, a cutlery manufacturer. Ethel and William were married in the registration district of Sheffield in 1915.

Military history

CWGC - no record. He died in Colchester on 25th April 1919, He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Gravestone inscription at Milton All Saints (Mausoleum) near Tuxford, Nottinghamshire: ‘In loving memory of Pte William Wardley, 2/4 York & Lancs Rgt. who died April 25th 1919 aged 27 years. Until the day break. Also of Ethel his wife died May 10th 1973, aged 83 years. Reunited. Also of Marjorie, their daughter, died 5th September 1992 aged 76 years. God bless.’
