John Ward was born in 1884 at Stathern, Leicestershire.he was the son of Edward an estate labourer and his first wife the late Mary Rebbeca Knapp.

His father Edward was born in 1856 at Scalford, Leicestershire, his mothe Mary Rebbeca Knapp was born in 1857 at Branston, Leicershire she died in 1891 at Melton Mowbray she was 34 yrs of age, they were married in 1876 their marriage was recorded in the Melton Mowbray registration district, they went on to have 5 children.

His father remarried on 12th July 1897 at St Marys Church, Radcliffe on Trent, to Mary Ann Durant born 1860 at Newark, she brought a child to the marriage Grace Reynolds Durant (born 1890 at Radcliffe on Trent.)

In the 1911 census his father is living at Barkston, Nottinghamshire, Edwar Ward 57 yrs is an estate labourer, he is living with his daughter Sarah Elizabeth Ward 33 yrs single and his grandson John Edward Ward 12 yrs and his grandaughters Dorothy 10 yrs and Annie 10 yrs old.

In the same 1911 census his stepmother Mary Ann Ward 51 yrs married a district nurse is living with her daughter Grace Reynolds Duran 21 yrs a blouse machinist, they are living at Radcliffe on Trent.

John Ward was the husband of Daisy Julia Evans, (born 11th July 1884) they were married in 1911 their marriage was recorded in the Bingham registratio district, they lived at 23 Burton Road, Melton Mowbray,

Commencing 23rd April 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shiilings and 9 pence increasing to 22 shillings and 6 pence a week on 27th November 1918.

His widow later re married to become Mrs Tavener. (pension record cards )

Military history

Private John Ward enlisted at Netherfield, Nottingham, whilst residing at Barnstone, Nottinghamshire, he served with the 1st battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he was killed in action on 15th September 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
