Family history

Fred Vessey was born in 1899 at Lincoln, he was the son of George Thomas a shepherd and Elizabeth Vessey, née Proctor of Osgodby, Lincoln.

His father George Thomas was born in 1870 at Thornton, Lincolnshire, hsi mother Elizabeth Proctor was born in 1876 at Metheringham, Lincolnshire, they were married on 28th September 1896 at Lincoln, they went on to have 9 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family were living at Howshaw, Lincolnshire, George Thomas 41 yrs is a shepherd he is living with his wife Elizabeth 35 yrs and their 7 children,including Fred 12 yrs a scholar.

Military history

Private Fred Vassey was called up for service on 12th April 1917 at Scunthorpe, he was 18 yrs of age and residing at Kirton, his next of kin was his father George Thomas of Bleasby House Farm, Bleasby, Lincolnshire, he was posted to the 2nd battalion Training reserve, he died on 10th May 1917 of pneumonia and is buried in Legsby (St Thomas) Churchyard, Lincolnshire.
