James Thomas Tilley was born in 1883 at Dudley, Worcestershire, he was baptised on 27th May 1893 at St Thomas Church Dudley, he was the son of James a house painter and decorator, and Rachel Tilley née Willetts.

His father James was born in 1849 at Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, he died in 1911 aged 62 yrs, his mother Rachel Willetts was born in 1852 at Dudley, they were married in 1873 at Dudley, they went on to have 6 children.

In the 1911 census his parents and sblings are living at 18 Withymoor Road, Netherton, Dudley, James 62 yrs is a painter and decorator, he is living with his wife Rachel 59 yrs and their children, Sarah 30 yrs a school teacher and Joseph 20 yrs a GPO telegraphist.

Military history

Private James Thomas Tilley enlisted at Ilkeston whilst residing at Stanton by Dale, he served with the 7th Service Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment, he died of wounds on 9th June 1917, he is buried at Westouter Churchyard and extension, Belgium
