Family history

Louis Thornley was born in 1897 at Stanton By Dale, he was the son of John a furnace man and Sarah Thornley, nee Purdy of Stanton-By-Dale, Nottingham.

His father John was born in 1869 at Nuthall, his mother Sarah Ann Purdy was born in 1867 at Mapperley, Derbyshire, they were married on 31st December 1889 in Derbyshire, they went on to have 7 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at Stanton By Dale, John 42 yrs a furnace man is living with his wife Sarah 44 yrs and their children, William 20 yrs an iron pipe fettler, John 18 yrs a labourer in a cinder crusher, Lewis 13 yrs George 10 yrs labourer in an iron foundry, George 10 yrs a scholar DorisMay 7 yrs and Eveline Annie 2 yrs of age.

Military history

Private Louis Thornley enlisted and served with the 7th battalion King's Royal Rifles, he was killed in action on 12th October 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial
