John Taylor was born in 1897 at Grassmoor, Derbyshire, he was the son of Dennis a coal carter and Amy Taylor née Simpson, of Warsop, Nottinghamshire.

His father Dennis was born in 1874 at Low Valley, Yorkshire his mother Amy Simpson was born in 1874 at Calow, Derbyshire they were married on 24th December 1896 at St Thomas Church, Chesterfield, they went on to have 6 children.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 32 Church Street, Warsop, Nottinghamshire, Dennis 36 yrs is a coal carter he is living wth his wife Amy 37 yrs and their children, John 14 yrs a coal carter, Dennis 13 yrs a scholar, Dorothy 11 yrs a scholar, Sarah 9 yrs, Ellen 7 yrs and Gladys 6 yrs old.

Military history

Private John Taylor enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Warsop, he served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 3rd October 1918, he is buried at Joncourt East British Cemetery, France.
