Family history

Walter Steele (junior) was born in 1897 at Sheffield he was the son of Walter Steele (senior) a confectioners labourer and Mary Ann Steele née Cotterill of Sheffield

His father Walter (senior) was born in 1871 at Sheffield his mother Mary Ann Cotterill was born in 1872 at Sheffield they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Sheffield registration district, they went on to have 8 children, sadly 5 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surving children were Walter b1897, George b1893 and Ada born b1900.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 6 Court, 14 Leicester Street, Sheffield, Walter (senior) 40 yrs is a confectioners labourer, he is living with his wife Mary Ann39rs and their children Walter 14 yrs an errand lad and Ada 11 yrs, a scholar.

Military history

Private Walter Steele enlisted at Newark whilst residing at Worksop, he served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he landed in France on 18th August 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
